The Chinese Writers’ Workshop (CWW), organised by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), successfully concluded its 5th “Chinese Writers-in-Residence Programme” and “Hong Kong Writers-in-Residence Programme” from 28 March to 28 April 2025. The event brought together three distinguished Writers-in-Residence to promote contemporary Chinese literature and culture, showcasing its diverse and rich landscape.

This year’s Chinese Writers-in-Residence were Ms. Wang Zhanhei from the Mainland and Mr. King Ban Hui from Malaysia. Ms. Wang is known for her adept use of the Wu dialect, sophisticated writing style, and plain description (baimiao) technique. Mr. King has garnered literary accolades such as Taiwan’s United Daily News Literary Award, the Huazong World Chinese Literature Award, and the Malaysia Outstanding Young Writer Award.

Joining them as the Hong Kong Writer-in-Residence was local crime and science fiction novelist Mr. Albert Tam. His debut detective novel, The Clan Must Die, was named the top Chinese title in the “Readmoo Recommended Mystery 2023” ranking, a joint initiative by Readmoo and the Mystery Writers of Taiwan. The novel also won the Grand Prize in the fiction category at the 2024 Taipei International Book Exhibition Book Prizes.

During the month-long residency, the three writers engaged with HKBU staff, students, and readers through a range of events, including reading and conversation sessions, individual talks, and writing workshops. Each writer offered their distinct genre expertise and thematic perspectives, enriching the literary experience for all involved. To learn more about their biographies, please click here
