HKBU hosts international symposium to advance evidence-based Chinese medicine and integrative medicine

The Vincent V.C. Woo Chinese Medicine Clinical Research Institute of HKBU co-organised a symposium with five partnering institutions on 23 March 2025, titled “Advancing Clinical Pathways and Practice Guidelines for Evidence-based Chinese Medicine & Integrative Medicine”. The event drew more than 200 attendees from around the world.

This symposium brought together top-tier research scholars, healthcare policymakers, and healthcare professionals from diverse fields, including Chinese medicine, integrative medicine, western medicine, evidence-based medicine and open science. Comprehensive discussions were conducted from multi-disciplinary perspectives, focusing on the latest research findings and clinical applications about clinical pathways and practice guidelines in evidence-based Chinese medicine and integrative medicine, as well as future directions for advancing their scientific, standardised, and international development. The event served as a platform for sharing valuable insights and experiences, while also fostering collaboration and innovation across disciplines and institutions.

Guests attending the symposium included Dr. Cheung Wai Lun, JP, Project Director, Chinese Medicine Hospital Project Office of the Health Bureau; Dr. Vincent Chung Chi Ho, Commissioner for Chinese Medicine Development, Chinese Medicine Unit of the Health Bureau; Mr. Harry Yeung, Vice President of the Vincent and Lily Woo Foundation and Council Member of HKBU; Professor Alex Wai, JP, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU; Professor Lyu Aiping, Vice-President (Research and Development) cum Dean of Graduate School of HKBU; Professor Bian Zhaoxiang, MH, Associate Vice-President (Clinical Chinese Medicine) of HKBU and Hospital Chief Executive of The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong. 

In his opening remarks, Professor Alex Wai highlighted HKBU’s remarkable accomplishments in Chinese medicine, a key discipline of the University, over the years. Notably, he mentioned that HKBU has been selected by the Government as the contractor for the service deed of Hong Kong’s first Chinese medicine hospital. Professor Wai believed that the symposium would offer new insights and momentum for evidence-based Chinese medicine and integrative medicine. 

Mr. Harry Yeung delivered a keynote speech on behalf of the Vincent and Lily Woo Foundation, expressing the Foundation’s expectations for the Vincent V.C. Woo Chinese Medicine Clinical Research Institute. These expectations include promoting the integration of traditional Chinese and western medicine, advancing innovation and translational research in Chinese medicine, and cultivating high-quality research talent in the field. Mr. Yeung also called for more talents to join the Chinese medicine industry to promote its development.

The Vincent V.C. Woo Chinese Medicine Clinical Research Institute was established in 2023, made possible by a generous donation of HK$75 million from the Vincent and Lily Woo Foundation, Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation. The Institute is dedicated to becoming a leading research institute in Chinese medicine for the world, delivering academic excellence in the standardisation and internationalisation of clinical research in Chinese medicine.
