The HKBU Foundation records with deepest sorrow the passing of Dr. Philip Wong Kin Hang, GBS, JP, donor of HKBU, on 28 May 2020.

Dr. Wong, founder of Philip K.H. Wong, Kennedy Y.H. Wong & Co., was a Hong Kong legal magnate who had made remarkable contributions to the legal sector for over 60 years through his passion and visionary leadership. He had an impressive record of public and community service and had been at the helm of numerous public bodies and charitable organisations. In recognition of his contributions to society, he was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1973 and received the Gold Bauhinia Star from the HKSAR Government in 2001. 

Dr. Wong was not only a prominent legal figure but also a well respected philanthropist. He founded the Philip K.H. Wong Foundation in 1990 to support various charitable activities. Being especially devoted to educational causes, he set up scholarships and bursaries for universities in Hong Kong and Mainland China to provide assistance for outstanding students who have financial difficulties. A staunch supporter of HKBU, Dr. Wong and his Foundation made generous donations in support of the University’s various endeavours, including the School of Chinese Medicine’s research projects as well as its meaningful initiatives amid COVID-19 pandemic such as distributing free Chinese Medicine Influenza Prevention Remedy to frontline healthcare workers and people in need. Dr. Wong’s children, particularly Ms. Ada Wong, JP, and Dr. Kennedy Wong, BBS, JP, have been very dedicated to serving the community and highly supportive of HKBU’s development. Ms. Ada Wong is Honorary Fellow of the University, while Dr. Kennedy Wong is currently Chairman of the Board of Governors of the HKBU Foundation.

The Foundation conveys its deepest condolences to the Wong family at this time of bereavement. Dr. Wong will always be remembered for his ardent support and distinguished contributions to Hong Kong as well as the University.
