54 The HKBU Foundation records with deepest sorrow the passing of Dr. Chiu Hin Kwong, OBE, JP, donor of the University, on 30 June 2024 at the age of 96. Dr. Chiu was a kind-hearted and benevolent doctor, passionately committed to serving people, especially those in the grassroots community. As Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital and a member of the Executive Council and Legislative Council of Hong Kong, he devoted himself to promoting the development of medical and public services in the city. Additionally, Dr. Chiu held key positions at several higher education institutions, including the Board of Governors of Hong Kong Baptist College and the Council and Court of HKBU. Dr. Yip was a highly respected musician, known for his unwavering dedication to music education in Hong Kong spanning more than 60 years. As an esteemed member of the HKBU family, he established the Department of Music and Fine Arts (which later became the Department of Music and the Academy of Music) in 1973 and served as its Founding Head until his retirement. Dr. Yip also held the position of Dean of Arts for four years and generously supported various University initiatives over the years. Originally from Israel, Dr. Aharoni first visited Hong Kong in 1969 for business and eventually moved to the city permanently in 1989. He made significant contributions to fostering trade and development between Israel and Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China as Chairman of the Israeli Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong for over two decades. His strong commitment to charity and community service was evident through his leadership roles in various non-profit and humanitarian organisations, as well as his generous support for HKBU’s international student exchange programmes.
