Astounding fundraising results for three consecutive years The HKSAR Government launched the Eighth Matching Grant Scheme and the Research Matching Grant Scheme in 2019 to diversify the funding sources of the higher education sector. However, the schemes commenced at a testing time when the whole world had to confront the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic downturn. This made the fundraising work of universities extremely challenging. Fortunately, the community has continued to render its support for HKBU with enormous enthusiasm and generosity. From 1 July 2019 to 31 December 2022, HKBU has secured an aggregate sum of HK$3.01 billion, comprising HK$1,722 million in donations, HK$608 million in matching funds, and HK$680 million in donation pledges. It cannot be more encouraging to learn that this magnificent sum has far exceeded the University’s annual target, enabling the Foundation to achieve remarkable fundraising results three years in a row. Meanwhile, the membership of the HKBU Foundation has grown rapidly, increasing by 576% to 886 as of 31 December 2022, while the total number of donors has risen to 17,379. They have undoubtedly become the bedrock of the University by making its numerous meaningful initiatives to become possible. Donations making impacts in quality and quantity The generous gifts from all sectors of society have made significant impacts on HKBU’s teaching and research in terms of both quality and quantity. On the teaching front, during the financial year of 2021-2022, about 1,800 scholarships and bursaries amounting to over HK$47 million were offered to HKBU students through donations. In particular, through the HKBU SEED Fund, needy students were provided with emergency relief to cope with the financial difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, with the aid of the First-Generation University Student Fund, eligible HKBU students had their employability enhanced by participating in internships and mentorship programmes or by securing professional qualifications and taking courses to upgrade their skills. On the research front, three endowed professorships were established with the enthusiastic support of Ma Pak Leung Company Limited and Professor Raymond R. Wong, SBS, as well as HKBU alumni and other supporters. For years, the HKBU Endowed Professorship Scheme has assisted the University in recruiting top world scholars to strengthen our academic and research capabilities.
