HKBU Foundation Annual Report 2021-2022

HKBU led a bold, pioneering attempt to apply AI technologies to the performing arts at a public concert held on 14 July 2022 in Hong Kong. The innovative performance was the first human-AI collaboration of its kind in the world to showcase how AI can be a creative force that can perform music, create cross-media art, and dance. The HKBU Symphony Orchestra performed a newly arranged choral-orchestral version of the song Pearl of the Orient with an AI virtual choir. A ballet performance featuring AI virtual dancers in Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, together with works created by an AI media artist, were also staged. This innovative concert provided the audience with a brand-new symphonic experience. The performance was one of the significant developments under the five-year research project “Building Platform Technologies for Symbiotic Creativity in Hong Kong” supported by HK$52.84 million in funding from the Research Grants Council. Following the concert, the University announced the launch of the world’s first Turing AI Orchestra at the Human, Machine, Art, Creativity: International Symposium on 9 August 2022. This marked the next milestone in the University’s visionary plan to broaden the scope and explore the potential opportunities of art co-creation by humans and AI. Another farsighted art-tech project led by HKBU, titled Future Cinema Systems: Next-Generation Art Technologies, has been awarded HK$35.4 million, the largest amount approved by the Innovation and Technology Support Programme under the Innovation and Technology Commission of the HKSAR Government. The two- year cross-territorial research project will be conducted by the University in collaboration with the City University of Hong Kong and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. The project will use the latest technologies, including AI, computer vision, deep learning and virtual reality, to develop the Future Cinema System.
