4 Record-breaking fundraising results Shortly after the HKSAR Government launched the Eighth Matching Grant Scheme (EMGS) and the Research Matching Grant Scheme in 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic broke out and the global economy slowed down. The University’s fundraising work found itself in a grave situation. Nonetheless, many of our supporters were still willing to lend a helping hand. By the time the EMGS had ended 21 months after its launch, HKBU had successfully secured a record-breaking sum of HK$950 million, comprising HK$662 million in donations and HK$288 million in matching funds. In terms of the total sum achieved, HKBU ranks fourth among the ten participating tertiary institutions, representing an impressive growth of 62% over the amount raised under the Sixth Matching Grant Scheme. From 1 July 2019 to 31 December 2021, the University received a total of HK$1,281 million in donations. Through the two matching grant schemes, HK$410 million in matching funds have been secured. Together with donation pledges amounting to HK$865 million, we have raised a spectacular sum of HK$2.56 billion. This remarkable result certainly provides a solid bedrock of support for the University’s long-term advancement. Meanwhile, the membership of the HKBU Foundation has grown rapidly by 540% to 839 as of December 2021. Indeed, our supporters’ dedication to education truly deserves our greatest respect.
