HKBU Foundation Annual Report 2018-19

19 Led by Dr. Simpson Wong, Associate Professor of the Department of Education Studies, a team comprising researchers from three local universities invented tangram games to train and test children’s reading, writing and word identification skills at an early age. Through these games, teachers and parents can also easily identify children with early visual processing difficulties and hence provide them with suitable support. An art installation created by Visual Arts student Mabel Lau and her collaborator was selected as one of the seven installation pieces under the “InPARK” Public Art Scheme. Made of fibreglass and galvanised steel, the artwork derives from the striped “watermelon balls” that were often played with by kids in the past. It is placed at the Tsun Yip Street Playground in Kwun Tong where people can enjoy sitting on the balls. HKBU endeavours to engage students in service-learning so that they can apply their knowledge to address community needs. For example, a group of Government and International Studies students initiated a campaign to advocate marine life conservation after discussing the environmental issues arising from the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. They dressed up as Chinese white dolphins to deliver the message of saving this species from extinction. This has fostered not only social changes but also the students’ good citizenship development. The University Library, the College of International Education and the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society jointly launched the “Hong Kong Wildtracks” website. The first interactive audio map developed in Hong Kong, the website integrates geographic information, ecology and scientific research, including more than 60,000 entries of local ecological data such as soundscapes, bird distribution, species diversity and abundance. The website aims to help the public and academics to study the wildlife in Hong Kong.
