Annual Report 2017-18
The Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation is going to celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2019. In addition to giving my congratulatory message to the Foundation, I would like to take this opportunity to look back at the development and growth of the Foundation and remind ourselves of the intentions of our founding members. The Foundation was established by a number of visionary community leaders, entrepreneurs and alumni. They envisaged that setting up this platform will extend the University’s support base and strengthen its financial capabilities, thereby facilitating all aspects of its advancement and assisting it in upholding its cherished principles of Whole Person Education. Over the past decade, the HKBU Foundation has recorded steady growth. Its membership has risen from 131 in 2009 to 673 as of December 2018, an impressive growth of 414%. Moreover, the Foundation has raised more than HK$1.36 billion over these years, opening up opportunities for HKBU to create and innovate as it wishes. The Foundation is often regarded as being like a big family, a comparison with which I entirely agree. Filled with a great passion and soaring ambitions for education, all Foundation members have been extremely generous with their time, tireless in their efforts, and unstinting with their wise counsel and their proactive participation in all the Foundation’s endeavours. Many members have invited their families, friends, business partners and clients to join them, therefore bringing fresh infusions of new blood into the Foundation’s work. Every Foundation member shares the same vision with HKBU and walks in unison with the University. Every programme to which they devote their staunch support represents an additional precious partnership between donors and the University. With the financial backing of the HKBU Foundation, the University has been able to launch an impressive array of original and forward-looking programmes over the past ten years. They include the Institute of Creativity, the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology, the Law Sau Fai Institute for Advancing Translational Medicine in Bone & Joint Diseases, the Cheung On Tak International Award for Outstanding Contribution to Chinese Medicine as well as a number of endowed professorships. Needless to say, pioneering campus activities such as the Pulitzer Prize Winners Workshop, the International Writers’ Workshop, The Dream of the Red Chamber Award and the Global University Film Awards have become exceptional events that stand out among local and overseas universities.
