3 In 2009 in the midst of the global financial crisis, a group of dedicated and enthusiastic people who had a firm belief in the impact of education made a bold decision. They were determined to establish the Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation, which has a clear mandate of consolidating support from all sectors of society to raise funds for HKBU, Hong Kong’s first tertiary institution that upholds the ethos of Whole Person Education. Since its inception, thanks to our generous supporters, the HKBU Foundation has grown steadily in terms of both membership and donation totals. Its membership has increased from 131 in 2009 to 643 as of December 2017, recording an impressive growth of 391%. Moreover, the Foundation has raised more than HK$1.3 billion over these years, providing a solid financial bedrock for HKBU’s advancement. For example, with the Foundation’s support, HKBU has thrived on the research front. Impressive progress that has been amply demonstrated at the prestigious International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva. At the exhibition’s shows in 2016 and 2017, our researchers won a total of 15 top prizes including the Grand Prix Award . For two years running, HKBU has been the only institution in Hong Kong to win gold medals for all the projects it submitted. These awards bear eloquent testimony to the remarkable research capabilities of HKBU and the high regard that our innovative R&D achievements have justly earned from international experts. In further recognition of our proven expertise, in 2017 HKBU’s School of Chinese Medicine’s research on microgravity and bone loss was the only project by a team outside Mainland China to be chosen for installation on the maiden voyage of China’s first cargo spacecraft Tianzhou-1 . The team’s lofty goals are firmly grounded in a simple desire to improve healthcare and people’s lives. The School’s project was a further important contribution by the University to the Mainland’s major scientific research initiatives, following HKBU’s participation in the first deep-sea expedition of the manned submersible Jiaolong in 2013. These successes have indeed proved to be an enormous source of encouragement not just for the University but for the entire academic world of Hong Kong. Donations from a wide variety of sectors provide vital strength for HKBU’s teaching and research capabilities, benefiting not only our academic staff and students but also the public at large. In the past year, HKBU received a number of substantial donations including the following: • The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust made a donation pledge in support of Jockey Club BIGMAP (Brain Invigoration and Gross Motor Activation Programme), a project by the Dr. Stephen Hui Research Centre for Physical Recreation and Wellness that aims at enhancing the cognitive function and the physical fitness of older adults in Hong Kong and preventing dementia;
